EMHG Research Award 2010

The European Malignant Hyperthermia Group (EMHG) is pleased to announce that also in 2010 an annual prize will be awarded.

New deadline: April 29th 2010 !

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an inherited disorder of the skeletal muscle cell, characterised by a hypermetabolic response to all commonly used inhalational anaesthetics and depolarising muscle relaxants. The clinical syndrome includes muscle rigidity, hypercapnia, tachycardia and myoglobinuria as result of increased CO2 production, oxygen consumption and muscle membrane breakdown. In humans and animals susceptible to MH it is generally accepted, that an increase in the level of myoplasmic free calcium is causative for the syndrome. Various hypotheses have been proposed to account for the increase of intracellular calcium levels, e. g. a defect in calcium release channel of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (ryanodine receptor), an abnormality in the excitation-contraction coupling mechanisms, or alterations in second messenger systems of skeletal muscles.

In the last years numerous research strategies focussed on different aspects of MH, including patient safety, genetics, pathophysiology, diagnosis etc. However, further scientific efforts are required in the future. Therefore, the EMHG Award is aimed to support relevant research of young investigators in MH by an elevated prize sum of € 1.500,-. Furthermore, the winner as well as the 2nd and 3rd quoted applicants will have free attendance to the EMHG meeting 2010.

Guidelines

  • A manuscript of outstanding quality addressing a relevant scientific question concerning MH will be awarded.
  • The manuscript must be prepared as abstract (introduction, material and methods, results, and discussion) with a maximum of two 1.5-spaced Din A4 pages (Times New Roman, 12), including 1 – 2 figures or tables, respectively. One copy unblinded, listing all authors and their affiliation(s), and four copies blinded. The manuscript should not be published but may be submitted for publication or in press, respectively.
  • The Award is open for EMHG members; in case of non-membership submission must be supported (accompanying letter) by a member of the group.
  • The applicant should be a resident / fellow or a specialist who is younger than 35 years of age.
  • Applications including a short CV must be send to Prof. Dr. F. Wappler, Cologne, Germany. Subsequently these will be reviewed by the EMHG Research Award Committee.
  • New deadline: April 29th 2010 !
  • All submitted abstracts will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the EMHG in Vienna, Austria, in May 2009, and thereafter the EMHG Award will be handed over.
